Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
