This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
